2.1 – THE National Institutes on Drug Abuse (NIDA) STEPS IN
Just days after the firestorm first started NIDA (with a great deal of interest in and who’s stated mission is to continue with our present day anti-Medical Cannabis Laws) steps in.  They request major changes in the N.C.I.’s web-site dealing with the subject.   They wish something more in keeping with the President OBAMA’s administrative policy.

Subject: FW: concern about information on NCI’s website
Importance: High
Jeff,
NIDA has alerted HIH OD and are asking (hoping) that we can make the changes they request to our website quickly. I’ve reviewed their comments and it seems they are asking for two immediate changes:
  • A statement that cannabis is not a FDA-approved therapeutic for any medical condition.
  • We insert a statement indicating that while there are no cancer-related adverse effects, cannabis may (have) non-cancer adverse effects and link to NIDA site for these. The first of these is implied because we do mention other similar synthetically produced therapeutics that are FDA approved without specifically stating that cannabis is not approved. They also misstate the second bullet as we indicate “in practice of integrative oncology” not “clinical oncology”.

Rick, We (the CAM Board) will be glad to review these concerns and NIDA's infomration and refferences.   Are the bullet points in your message all of NIDA's concerns?   How were they transmitted to us; is there a letter or email that I can see, and possibley share with the other board members? Thanks for always supporting the editorial independence of the PDQ boards. Jeff
