MEDICAL CANNABIS
A SHORT GRAPHICAL HISTORY
GREECE & ROME

THE GEOPONICA

It is our feeling that many Ancient uses of Medical Cannabis are now being ignored by historians simply because they were not famous physicians of their day.   The 10th Century Byzantine agricultural book, “The Geoponica,” which by anyone’s standards is anything but a medical text serves as a good example as it still contains medical references:
    THE GEOPONICA:
  • Book 16.15 --- Describes the use of a mixture of cannabis ashes and honey as a remedy for an ulceration in the lower back.
  • Book 13.11 --- Advises the use of green Cannabis as a form of insect repellent.
At the present time a copy of the complete book is avalable for free viewing at http://www.ancientlibrary.com/geoponica/ below are selected bits and pieces:

If this were a book on Industrial Hemp, one could probably go wild at this point; -- The Geopoenica is after all an agricultural book. However as our interest here is solely the medical uses of Cannabis, the reader should take note of the following:

  • Unless you knew enough to be on the look out for the word 'hemp' in all likelyhood the above references would have (how shall I say it) gave gone in one ear and gone out the other. [This is afterall an agricautural book]

  • That Cannabis - while being put to medical uses seems to only be mentioned as an afterthought. Just one ingredient out of many.

Thus the reasoning behind our original pre-assumption, that many of the medical uses that Cannabis was put to by the ancients are simply being ignored by historians for the simple reason that their mention was made, NOT in a major medical text, but in the more obscure works.
