COMPOUND MEDICINES

Chapter 26
CANNABIS & COMPOUND PHARMACEUTICALS

Ergotin
Compound (multiple Ingredients) Drug
[Cannabis being only one of the ingredients]

26.1 - CANNABIS & COMPOUND MEDICINES:
By far the greatest number of Antique Cannabis Medicines, are in effect compound drugs, which by definition are physically composed of multiple ingredients --- Cannabis being just one of the ingredients.

Thus there are those who question the inclusion of compound medicines in this catalog; ---- Their logic being that as Medical Cannabis was only one of the multiple ingredients, that therefore they were NOT pure Cannabis medicines and thus not eligible for inclusion.   And while there is some truth in that; still as this is technically a basic price guide for Antique Cannabis Collectors, we would be reminisce in not mentioning them.   Additionally, on a more somber note, by far the greatest number of Antique Cannabis Medicines were in effect compound drugs making the subject all but impossible to ignore.

26.2 - MEDICAL USES OF CANNABIS COMPOUND DRUGS:

What exactly were these compound drugs used for?
Admittedly while such knowledge would be a great finding tool for Antique Cannabis Collectors, still there are some moral and practical issues that prevent us from going into the subject.   Please understand that there’s always some fool out there that’s going to try and (medically speaking) self diagnose.   And hey, guess where he’s going to get his medical information from ---- Again, the author makes no pretense of having any medical training -- he has none.

PLEASE Don’t You Be The Fool --- If you have a medical problem, see a trained health care provider.   And don’t even think of using 19th Century drugs that have long ago become obsolete.   Just look at some of the following(taken right off the labels): Strychnine, Opium, Potassium, Arsenic and those are just some of the co-ingredients found.   Do your really want to self-diagnose with any of that stuff?

26.3 - PILL verses TABLETS verses CAPSULES :
What’s the difference between any of the following:

WampoleP95
WampoleP95
Henry Walpole [1906] Catalog, Pg 95

WampoleP164
WampoleP164
Henry Walpole [1906] Catalog, Pg 164

From a chemical or formulational point of view, I would have to say nothing*.   But note that one is a pill, another a tablet and yet another a capsule.   This means that this manufacturer would have had three different bottles or containers for this drug.   Which in turn means that today’s Antique Cannabis Collectors have to be on the look out for any or all three bottles.

* For our purposes the museum counts the above medicine(s) as being three distinctly different product(s).   Again, some technical types might disagree, but this is after all only a price guide for antiques.

26.4 - COMPOUND CANNABIS DRUGS -- SOME EXAMPLES:
OK, ok, I know, from a medical standpoint, this is probably one of the most un-scientific and wacko sorting systems possible.   But if ones purpose is simply to locate these pre-1942 Medical Cannabis antiques then it makes a lot of sense.

The idea is simple; instead of trying to list them via medical use, we shall instead list them via the drugs main label title.   That is to say, if the label’s main headline reads “Zinc Phosphide Compound”, then that’s what we’ll index it by, “Zinc Phosphide”, irregardless of what other ingredients it contains.   However, note that on the negative side -- Even though it might be possible for a compound drug to contain Zinc Phosphide (as an ingredient) unless it’s on the main labels headline, it won’t be indexed as such.

Again, while awkward --- It does make it simple for antique collectors to find these Cannabis Compound Drugs.   Allowing them to just look at the main title of the label.

Note that as some compound drugs have their own dedicated chapters, no attempt will be made to list any of the following:
  • Bromides
  • Chlorodyne
  • Chlor-Anodyne
  • Nerve Tonics / Neuralgia
  • Cough syrups
  • Pain anodyne
  • Cystitis / Female ailments
  • Aphrodisiacs
Also note that it would be all but impossible to list each and every one of the thousands of the pre-1942 Compound Cannabis medicines that have been documented so far.   Please treat the following only as a VERY PARTIAL list of [at least] the most common ones.

WARNING --- Due to TYPOGRAPHICAL ERRORS (which are probably many), the following contains numerous probable spelling and measurement errors.

Again these are but a few of the thousands of Cannabis compound medicines -- It is all but impossible to list them all.   [Note for those interested, try to obtain a couple of the Museum’s CD-Roms containing “selected pages” of numerous old pharmaceutical price & product catalogs]

26.5 - SHOTGUN MEDICINES:
Surprisingly enough, as a museum we’ve haven’t been able to locate very many “Shotgun Medicines” which contained Medical Cannabis.

“Shotgun Medicines,” being the term (we believe it was coined by the AMA) to describe drugs used to treat multiple but similar ailments.   The idea was simple: What if one had a general idea, but didn’t exactly know what the exact ailment was?   The solution being to just give the patient a medicine that treated everything at once --- thus the term Shotgun.

The concept itself wasn’t all that bad, and to this day doctors still use the concept of (prescribing multiple drugs at once), when they don’t know exactly what’s wrong or have no way of performing the proper tests.   However, in terms of actual Shotgun Drugs, as one could guess, the AMA had a fit about it.

Bell NEUROSINE

To the best of our knowledge, this is the only true "Shotgun Drug," making use of Cannabis that we've been able to find.   As can be seen it's NOT a quack medicine, but its not standard either.   The idea is that one of the included ingredients would fix what-ever it was that was ailling you, and the others won't kill you. -- Again the AMA didn't like that approach -- not one bit at all.
